Name: Katie Riopel- better known as Katie K9
Hometown: I was raised in Roseville, Mn - born in Duluth, Mn
Been with FM107 since: First Saturday in August of 2002 - since its beginning-but two months shy…
What is your role at FM107?: I host the Katie K9 radio show every Sunday from 4 – 6 pm – call in and ask your pupper problems or cat problems or just tune in to learn a whole lot of stuff about your furry friends!
What do you wish your role was at FM107?: I got it- I LOVE doing my show!- being a guest on some of the other shows would be icing on the cake!
Share a favorite FM107 moment: When we did a meet and greet at a bar in Roseville- I can’t remember the name- it was great meeting the listeners and visit with the other radio personalities and staff. I felt like part of the team! since I do not see many people with my show being on Sundays.
Share some behind the scenes FM107 gossip: Since my show is on Sundays there are not too many people there- its hard to start or get gossip with just the three people that I see each week. I suppose I COULD start something if it is a requirement. One of the three I see is the security guard- I better be careful there.
List all of the "hats" you wear in your current life:
- Mother
- Wife
- Grandmother
- A Friend to many two legged and four legged friends- I measure my life (age) in friends ….not years.
- Caretaker for all my animals on our hobby farm- 3 horses, 1 dog, 1 goat, 25 chickens, 14 cats, 4 geese, goldfish, and cows
- Lawn maintenance for our farm- 4+ hours of mowing each week- not including weed whipping- that’s another… 3+ hours if I do not stay on top of it.
- Plowing the farm in the winter
- Katie the Parade Lady- I started a parade 13 years ago for the Hugo Lions Club and I still put together the parade for Hugo Good Neighbor Days every year in June
- I Started our local Hugo newspaper in 1998 to 2004- it has a new owner now and a new name- was the “Hugonian” and is now “The Citizen”. I still do articles, have my Katie K9 column, sell some ads and deliver the paper to Hugo businesses.
- I Started the Hugo Business Association in 2002 and was president until 2006- now I am just a member.
- An author- I Wrote a book in 1997 – PT 101-(potty training 101) for dogs - this is the most often asked question I get, it is a quick read, funny and it has a happy ending! I am in the process of writing two more now- How to cook for your dogs and a handbook for vet techs to give them better solutions to dog problems that their clients ask them.
- Owner of Katie K9 Obedience School in Hugo Mn for 23 years- and dog obedience instructor and dog coach for 36 years.
- I am on a committee for the City of Hugo- the Projects Fund Committee- I ‘m trying to get a nice community center in Hugo.
- I am there when life seems not fair to my friends- a life coach I guess.
- I do not like the number 13 – so we will move on to….
- I started a Teen Center in Hugo for kids 10 to 18 years old to have a place to go and have some fun and meet new friends- it is open every Friday night- Spring to Fall, and other times when I have the time to be there. Always looking for volunteers- but none seem to step up to the plate.
- Last but one of my favorites- I host a radio call in show called Katie K9 for FM107.1- it is the fastest two hours of my life each week- and I love every minute there!
Describe any past fashion fads that you at the time embraced but now regret: I loved the bell bottom jeans and still do! I was not into fashion , just functional and comfortable.
Name a television character past or present that best describes your personality: Nothing that comes to mind- I guess I am just one of a kind!
What's your favorite comfort food?: Any food…but NO mushrooms! Anything that grows in the dark you have to worry about. Oreo cookies, Dove milk chocolate squares or Dove ice cream bars, butter pecan sundaes from DQ or a cashew and caramel sundae from Culver’s - rate high on my list!
If there was an FM107 reality show who would get kicked out of the house first?: Probably a radio show host- we all have very strong personalities! We all would clash or we would talk each other out of voting for the others and pick on the wee ones. Then things would really get interesting with all the strong personalities left.
Do you believe in love at first sight?: Yes.
First celebrity crush: Not really into it- but I loved Elvis! And all his movies! I saw him in concert when he was here in St. Paul.. many moons ago.
Latest celebrity crush: Nobody really impresses me these days- but my favorite song is - “Beer for my horses!”
Name another person on this earth you would love to trade places with for a day (and why): it would need to be more than just a day- but Will Steger- I admire him so much- for his trips to the North and South Pole – his way of life, working with his dogs. I could never meet him, because he would literly leave me speechless, he has accomplished so much that so few have seen personally or understand the why of it for the hardship he had to endure to do it. He hates the lime light- but once again will do it for the good of all.
Name the last good movie you saw: I do not go to movies very often, I buy them- I got tired of paying late fees when I rented them. – I have 545 VCR movies and 325 DVD’s- I like movies that make me laugh or feel good- comedies and romantic comedies and old movies like “Francis the Talking Mule, Abbott and Costello, Ma & Pa Kettle. I also like Musicals: Singing in the Rain, Oklahoma! State Fair, The Music Man. We do not have cable or Satellite. I am a night owl and there is nothing good on late at night. So now I always have something to watch!
Name the last good book you read: “Pets at Risk” by O’Driscoll, I have over 225 books about dogs. Then the latest edition of “ Uncle John’s - The Bathroom Reader” and “Do Penguins have Knees? series”- I love trivia! I do not do well with chapter books, I can’t put them down once I start them, so I do not get much done until I finish the book.
When all the hoopla over Harry Potter started, I got the first book for my daughter since she loves to read books. She just let it sit around for over a year and never picked it up, she said it did not interest her. So I picked it up to see what was all the hoopla was about. Well all I can say is that, the answer machine picked up all the phone calls, the animals gave me a “look” when I was late doing chores, and if they did not deliver, the family was on their own. I have only read the first four of the series, for family reasons.
What TV show(s) are you currently hooked on?: “Hero’s “ , “Gray’s Anatomy” (but maybe not the next season), and ” Desperate Housewives.”
